Title: Vascular plants of Marimbus, a swampy area in the Chapada Diamantina, Bahia State, Brazil.

Authors: FRANCA, Flávio et al.

Abstract: Swampy vascular plants are important components of tropical ecosystems although barely studied in the Brazilian Northeast. This paper goals at the identification of vascular plants of Marimbus, a swampy area in the Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, discussing geographic distribution and biological specter aspects. It also presents a comparison with other floristic surveys in swampy areas. 130 species in 46 families were registered. The family Cyperaceae was the most abundant (15%), followed by Rubiaceae (10%), Poaceae (8%), Myrtaceae (7.6%), Leguminosae (6.8%) and Polygonaceae (3.8%). Amphibious plants are the most common ones (58%), the emergent, floating (fixed or free) and submerged ones make up to 39% of the flora, which presents 25% of nanophanerophytes, 13% of geophytes and 12% of microphanerophyte. Most species present neotropical distribution (34%), many are ruderal (17%) and some are multicontinental (9%). This flora is less dissimilar to that from Pantanal Matogrossense.

Keywords: biological specter; floristic survey; geographic distribution; macrophytes.

Title: The knowledge of traditional fishermen regarding the spatio-temporal dynamics of natural resources in the Chapada Diamantina region, state of Bahia.

Authors: MOURA, Flávia de Barros Prado e MARQUES, José Geraldo Wanderley

Abstract: This paper examines the traditional ecological knowledge of a community of fishermen that live in the APA Marimbus-Iraquara (Conservation Unit). The study aimed at collecting information regarding mainly local perception about the spatial and seasonal distribution of natural resources. Data were collected using open and semi-structured interviews, field observation and guided tours. Also, zoological and botanical materials were collected. The study results indicate the existence of a broad local ecological knowledge about species and ecosystems, particularly in relation to fish species.

Keywords: conservation unit; traditional knowledge; ethnoecology.

Title: Identity Configurations in Cascalho and in Além dos marimbas, by Herberto Sales

Author: GARCIA, Frédéric Robert.

Abstract: Centered on the works of Bahian writer Herbert Sales, this dissertation aims to analyze the founding elements of the universe of Chapada Diamantina (Bahia/Brazil) as identity constructions of the individual and his environment. We emphasize the importance of the study of identity in Brazilian literature, specifically the literature of Bahia through the analysis of the two novels that constitute the corpus of this research: Cascalho and Além dos marimbus. This study aims to demonstrate how dialogue is established between literature and other social discourses, from an interdisciplinary perspective. We highlight the place of the author in the context of Brazilian literature: the “literary project of Herbert Sales”. We analyze the social forms of identity constructions and their relation to the power, collusion and reciprocity of the state in these interrelationships, and how the support network to “coronelato” is articulated towards its legitimating project. We also focused on the identity constructions through the important contribution of orality, myths and popular beliefs in the local culture. We address the representations of territory in the fictional universe of Chapada Diamantina, as a crossing space of diverse cultures, “territory of passage “, which embodies both the Eldorado and hell on earth. Finally, we highlight the different representations of nature and its epic dimension in the novels under analysis.

Keywords: Identity, Power, Orality, Popular Culture, Territory, Coronelismo, Bahia.
